The Container Connection: Building on the 2026 MHI Annual Industry Report

Every year, the MHI Annual Industry Report delivers one of the clearest snapshots available of the forces driving our industry. The 2026 edition, Rewiring the Future: A Supply Chain Playbook for Innovation, is no exception. Based on responses from more than 500 supply chain professionals, it maps the trends reshaping logistics and distribution with precision and authority.

Containers aren’t a major focus of this year’s report. The word “containers” appears once, in a case study about unloading sea freight, which leaves room to explore how much this physical layer matters to the trends the report does cover.

For many operations, the container is a physical variable that can quietly influence the return on the very technology investments the report recommends. Here’s where the container connection matters most:

Workforce & Labor Dependency

The report identifies talent and workforce challenges as the industry’s single most pressing operational problem. 90% of supply chain organizations agreed on that fact, up 9 points from the prior year. Automation is the primary strategic response, and that response is correct.

But automation only reduces labor dependence when the physical inputs running through those systems perform efficiently and consistently. Dimensional variance, degraded bases, and worn sidewalls don’t trigger a system alert. They trigger a human intervention. An employee gets pulled off the floor to clear a jam, reposition a container, or override a sensor misread.

The container is one of the last labor variables that many operations haven’t yet isolated. When it underperforms, the automated system does too, regardless of how sophisticated the software and robotics above it might be.

Technology Adoption & Real-Time Data

RFID, IoT, and advanced analytics rank among the top investment priorities in this year’s report. The driving argument is straightforward: real-time data is no longer optional. The report goes so far as to identify legacy systems that can’t support it as an immediate operational threat.

What those technologies share is a dependency on the physical layer they attach to. The RFID market is projected to grow from $14.5 billion in 2022 to $35.6 billion by 2030, according to MarketsandMarkets via TechTarget.

That trajectory reflects how foundational real-time identification has become across supply chain operations. When a container degrades in ways that affect tag readability or sensor detection, it creates a data gap. That gap can introduce costly errors into the data infrastructure that warehousing and distribution operations everywhere are investing in.

For industries where traceability is a compliance requirement, not just an operational preference, container specification belongs in the technology conversation from the start.

E-Commerce Growth & Fulfillment Speed

U.S. retail e-commerce reached $1.2337 trillion in 2025, accounting for 16.4% of all retail sales. That’s a 5.4% year-over-year increase, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. The infrastructure response to that growth is already well underway: robotic picking systems, automated sortation, and high-speed conveyor networks are being deployed at scale across warehouses and distribution centers worldwide.

Those systems are engineered to tolerances measured in millimeters. Containers that don’t maintain dimensional consistency throughout their lifecycle can introduce throughput variability into the system. When failures occur, they surface as fulfillment problems: late shipments, missed SLAs, and line stoppages. The container is rarely identified as the root cause, but part of the solution starts with specifying the right containers.

The Physical Foundation

The 2026 MHI Annual Industry Report accurately maps the strategic priorities of a rapidly evolving industry, and there’s a real opportunity to build on that foundation by also considering the physical layer those priorities depend on. Operations investing in automation, traceability infrastructure, and high-speed fulfillment systems are often making decisions about containers by default rather than by design.

Bringing container specification into the conversation at the system design stage, before those decisions are locked in, can make a real difference. In fact, it’s one of the highest-return moves available to operations leaders evaluating their next automation investment.
