Global supply chains are operating in a period of constant adjustment. Shifting trade policies, evolving sourcing strategies, and rising customer expectations have made resilience and adaptability more important than ever. This year at MODEX 2026 in Atlanta, you’ll hear directly from a leader who navigates these challenges at an enormous scale. Richard McPhail, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of The Home Depot, will deliver a keynote titled “Lessons Learned from the Supply Chain Front Line.”
Meet Richard McPhail
As CFO of Home Depot, the world’s largest home improvement retailer, McPhail oversees financial strategy for a business that operates more than 2,300 stores. In his longtime role with the company, he has helped guide the company through periods of growth and operational change.
McPhail earned a master’s degree in business administration from the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University. He previously worked for the Marconi Corporation, Wachovia Securities and Arthur Anderson before joining The Home Depot in 2005.
Diversifying the Supply Base
In recent years, shifting tariffs have tested global sourcing strategies across retail. The Home Depot has addressed this challenge in part through a long-term focus on supplier diversification. In a May 2025 interview with CNBC’s “Closing Bell Overtime,” McPhail credited his company’s decade-long effort to diversify its supply base as a key factor for managing tariff-related pressure.
McPhail forecasted that by May 2026, “we expect that no single country outside the United States will represent more than 10% of the products we purchase.”
Addressing the Skilled Labor Gap
The supply chain industry is not unique in facing workforce challenges. Home Depot has also recognized that many of its professional contractor customers struggle to find enough skilled labor to complete jobs. In response, The Home Depot launched its Path to Pro program in 2018. The initiative provides free training for individuals seeking to enter construction and trade careers.
The program has gained meaningful traction. McPhail told CNBC that “we’ve trained and certified and placed over 300,000 pros into the construction industry.” Path to Pro offers an example of how companies can play a constructive role in addressing labor gaps that affect their customers and the industries they serve.
